P. 7
Introduction
The management of castration-resistant prostate cancer continues to evolve as
clinical research progresses and practical experience grows with this distinct
population of prostate cancer patients. This handbook, Practical Approaches to
Managing Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer (CRPC), is intended to provide a
concise overview of the practical aspects of patient care throughout the CRPC care
continuum, including patient assessment, treatment options, monitoring, and toxicity
management.
Urologists will have different levels of involvement in managing patients with CRPC
depending on personal preferences as well as loco-regional resources. This booklet
aims to discuss the practical issues around the use of different agents prescribed
by the multidisciplinary team, including considerations around when to initiate
treatment, when to stop therapy, treatment sequencing, and referral to tertiary care
centres. The information presented in this handbook is not definitive guidance but
rather is meant to support discussions with the patient and multidisciplinary team
regarding both short- and long-term treatment planning and patient management.
Practical Approaches to Managing Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer (CRPC)
focuses on therapies that are currently approved for use in Canada. The Canadian
Urological Association aims to update the content as the treatment landscape
changes and new agents become available. We welcome your feedback to ensure
this handbook serves as a helpful resource in your practice.
