Cochrane Review: Summary of Conclusions

• Extended prophylaxis with LMWH significantly reduces the risk

of VTE compared with inpatient prophylaxis only

• Bleeding complications after major abdominal or pelvic surgery

is not significantly increased by extended prophylaxis

• Effect seen holds true for DVT alone and for both proximal and

symptomatic DVT

• Quality of evidence is moderate

• Overall, study supports the use of extended prophylaxis
