        Highlights from the Canadian Undergraduate
Urology Curriculum, Resident and Fellow, and
        Post-Training Committees’ reports submitted at
the August 2020 Virtual Summer Board Meeting
T he CanUUC Committee led the French translation of the current ‘What is Urology’ video. Thanks go to Dr. Felix Couture,

who volunteered many hours of translation assistance, and to the urology staff at Sherbrooke Hospital, who were
interviewed on camera to augment the French segments.
The online curriculum, posted in the CUA website “Undergraduate Education” tab, was repopulated with an updated
        version of multiple teaching tools designed for learners to fill the medical school graduate urological knowledge gaps;
mini-assessments (short MCQ) were added for the learners to complete at the end of the presentation.

As Chair of the CUA Canadian Undergraduate Urology Curriculum Committee, Dr. Trustin Domes invited the RFC Chair to
serve on the CanUUC Committee and she will be involved in a collaborative initiative with residency programs to develop
an awareness for learners using a virtual platform.
With an eye towards the future, under the direction of Chair, Dr. Anjali Lobo, and Secretary, Dr. Valérie Hogues, the CUA
Resident and Fellow Committee were encouraged to participate in initiatives that impact their membership demographic:
3	The task force for the new CUA website, to ensure that it is user-friendly for CUA’s candidate members.
3	The call for applicants for a junior editor position on the CUAJ Editorial Board.
3	Consolidating a list of available fellowships to post on the CUA Website Trainee Education site.

The Post-Graduate Training Committee Chair, Dr. Keith Rourke, reported on the growing success of the CUA supported
T-Res program. It currently has 135 active resident users in 13 urology programs. Given that surgical logbooks are now a
mandatory part of CBD training, T-Res will be an invaluable tool that will provide data upon which to objectively base
decisions regarding required training experiences, accreditation standards, and number of observations of achievement
required to pass each entrustable professional activity. The committee will also be reviewing case log data from the pre-
COVID period and subsequently the March – September 2020 period to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on the resident
        surgical experience.
The COVID pandemic also impacted the CaRMS interviews, which will now be adapted to a virtual format for the 2021
cycle. The committee is drafting a schedule of virtual open houses to provide residency programs the opportunity to expose
        elective students to each program.

After considering several options, the Post-Graduate Training Committee concluded that a national basic science course
boot camp would be beneficial for urology residents, ideally in the PGY 1-2 years, when most residents begin the foundation
stage of urology training. A planning subcommittee has been assembled to present a complete proposal to CUA. The
Committee believes this will be a valuable and much needed experience for junior urology residents.
Lastly, in response to the pandemic restrictions, the 2020 Royal College urology spring examination was postponed from
April to September 16 & 17 and will be in written format only.
