Risk Factors for PPI
Age
• Age strongly predictive of PPI
• Atrophy of the rhabdosphincter occurs with age, nerve and blood supply damage
• Canadian population-based survey, defined leakage as more than a tablespoon of urine.
• Men <60 years of age had incontinence rates of 4%
• Men >75 years of age had incontinence rates of 10% [Karakiewicz et al., 2004]
Obesity/BMI
• Delay return of continence, not strongly correlated with PPI
• men with normal weight had significantly higher continence rates compared with overweight and
obese men at 12 and 24 months post-operatively
